Weekend recap in an email from Coach Adams

Hey Matt,

Congratulations again on your big weekend. I hope you're enjoying it and not worrying too much about school/xc.

The Glows/Grows thing is a "Wes thing" that I didn't embrace at first but I like it and am trying to use it in my classroom more. I threw in some pictures of the boys I found on milesplit to illustrate a couple of things.

Glows:
1. All teams: Doing warmups, cooldowns, and stretching with little to no prompting. Awesome self-discipline here.
2. Girls' race: keeping it together when things don't go as expected. The finishing order was a little scrambled and the start was rough, but the girls pushed all the way through and had good finishing times after a hard week of training and racing.
3. Boys' race: preparing before the race and letting off excess energy at the starting line.

I'm not sure what's going on here. It looks a little like Tyler is about to punch someone, but as I got to the start after the girls' race, the boys were in the middle of a runout doing this. They all had strong races and are continuing to grow. Also they nabbed starting lane #6, as opposed to the girls' #21.
4. Justin Garagnani: from taking care of cards while I was running around to continuing to cut time off of his own 5K while working to bring younger runners along on JV. This kid is a huge asset to our team.
5. Everybody's parents are awesome.

Everyone has a lot to look forward to and a lot to be proud of and thankful for.

Grows:
1. Girls getting to the start early when there are no assigned lanes: the girls had to start at the bottom of the sloped start line and Sierra did not have a number on her hand at the start. I got her number from my phone and borrowed a sharpie from another coach, but it was a very close call.
2. Eyes up. It was sunny and the kids were suffering a lot, so they had even more of a tendency to get caught looking at the ground. Jarrett and Tyler look different than many of our kids do and that is one thing they both do really well.

Thanks for your continued leadership and for giving me the opportunity to learn from you and work with such a great group of kids. Yesterday was exhausting. You do so much on race day!

Thanks,
Charlie

Good afternoon TNHSXC family.  We have so much to celebrate this week and more work to do.

TNHSXC Weeknight Warfare - Huge thanks to all of you for your help Tuesday night, and lots of kudos to the kids who absolutely rocked it.  We were 3rd in girls and the boys flat-out owned it.  Nice work.  I've attached the results and I've heard lots of positive feedback - all because of your support!

Popsicle Races - still going strong, Bethlehem hosted this Wednesday and our little brothers and sisters rocked it - Alyssa Manning and Sydney Newton are running great, and Ethan Vance had a huge race.  And, Lane, Ethan and Awstin had all raced back to back days!  We host this coming Wednesday the 17th.

Saturday, Iron Horse Festival 5k - I will be setting up registration at 7, registration opens at 7:30 and the race start is 8:30.  Our kids are invited to race for free, if they want a race t-shirt they have to kick in $10.  It'll still make us a few bucks per shirt but gets the kids a free race and a shirt.  We'll need a few people to work the registration tables and a few to work the finish line with me.  Please be there by 7:15 to work, and all kids need to be there by 7:45 to register and start warming up.  Remember that kids have to register even if they paying nothing - they will need a number.

Spiritwear - Coach Hart said that he would be finishing our clothing orders this weekend when I went and picked up our Iron Horse stuff.  It's us coaches that cover them up with race orders that are time sensitive, which is what has caused the delay.  Next week, he promises.

See you all tomorrow at the Iron Horse Festival!

Matt

... and later that night ...

Just some late evening details -

The kids do not have to be in uniforms tomorrow for Iron Horse.  They can wear whatever they feel like, but I do however want to see some cohesiveness as a team in terms of warming up and supporting one another.  As soon as the entire high school team has finished they are all going back out and running the course again.  Just so we're all on the same page - get done, cheer on your teammates, go back out for 3.1 easy.  We won't start awards without you, and frankly will be happy to have you out of our hair!!

Our kids have been putting in some killer workouts and I love seeing such huge and consistent efforts.  This is the most crucial time of year considering effect on our results in November.  We need every runner here every day (middle schoolers and multi-sport athletes have a slightly different schedule).  And, I appreciate those kids that do the extra running with me and on their own, and the communication from folks when they cannot be at practice or have to come late.

We are on the cusp of being a very good team.  It's going to take support from all of us and dedication from the kids.  And, even though running is very much a solo pursuit, each person's running directly affects this team.

Here's to the 11th Annual Iron Horse Festival 5k and our continued growth!

Matt

TNHSXC - 9/7/14

Good Sunday evening TNHSXC family.  The kids performed really well Saturday night against a super fast field.  I'm attempting to attach four pdf's of results, but please remember to check ky.milesplit.com frequently following meets for quickest access to results.  There are some features that require a membership, but results are free.  Almost every runner dropped their season best time or established a strong first mark to go from - congrats to all the kids on an outstanding night of racing.  Now moving forward -

Tuesday - Weeknight Warfare XC All-comers - we are hosting our first real meet of the year and the course looks great.  Tomorrow's practice will be an easy lap on the course then helping me get set up.  Tuesday night, we will need all hands on deck to help put the race on.  We have Coach Bradley from NCHS as our official and starter, his wife Lucretia as the Hytek operator, and me as the meet director/timer.  We will need help in the following areas (some of which I'm tentatively assigning people to (we like to have girls parents work the boys race and vice versa) -

head coach - Coach Adams (kids go to him for numbers and anything else)
lead vehicle - Doc
trail vehicle - Kelvin (Eric the trainer will take the boys V race so you can watch Tyler)
finish line -
- back up timer ?
- chute workers - Dooley, Andrea and ???
- card hander outers - Pam and ???
- number writer downers - Jackie and ???
course marshals - ???
concessions - ???

This is the link I've sent to the ten schools  attending and I've pasted the top of it below   https://docs.google.com/a/nelson.kyschools.us/document/d/18TKkMBDHC_OSAfE2evzjgXSw6-2Hqcu1ClwodNy-QqU/edit

Schedule of events -

5:30 - Middle school combined 3k (girls and boys scores separated for results)
6:00 - HS Girls 5k (unlimited entries per team - top 5 scored)
6:45 - HS Boys 5k (unlimited entries per team - top 5 scored)

The schools are:

TNHS
Nelson Co.
Bethlehem
Bardstown
Larue Co.
Carroll Co.
Central Hardin - girls
Christian Academy of L'ville
Bernheim Middle
Howevalley

We do a really really good job putting on races and that is due entirely to the support of our TNHSXC family.  Please let me know what job you would like and I'll pencil you in.  Remember the more people that help, the more people get to relax and watch their own kid's race.

Every TNHS runner needs to be there representing, so I'm not even listing a roster.  The competition for the top 7 varsity spots has become fierce, and we want to keep that going.  Remember that we are a team, do everything as a team and every member of our family cheers on every single kid.  This is OUR HOUSE and I want us to OWN IT.

Wednesday, Sept. 10th - Popsicle Race #4 - hosted by Bethlehem, this race course is located next to St. Joe's.  I'll be heading over right after practice, will actually get to warm the kids up and coach a little, and I'll do the timing for them.

Saturday, Sept. 13th - Iron Horse Festival 5k - we also host this race which is in its 11th year this year.  The kids get to race for free, but the $15-20 entry fees we collect from everyone else help fund our program.  Please encourage all of those friends and fellow runners to attend.  It will be the third 5k in the county in three weeks, but I think we can still expect a pretty good crowd.  We will again need a number of folks to help with registration and the finish line.  Anyone wishing to run or walk it should get to - just let me know who I can count on to work and I'll start assigning jobs.

Thank you all for your continued support for our program.  The teams successes are a direct result of the positive environment that you foster.

Matt

St. X Tiger Run / Labor Day 5&10k

Fantastic weekend for the TNHSXC family. Of the nine kids we took to Tiger Run, I couldn't be more happy with any one of their races.  Big firsts for many of the younger runners - picking up right where they left off for the returners. Jarrett's 16:34 put him in the top ten of the most competitive field assembled in the state that day (he would've won the RaiderTwilight be almost 30 seconds!). Beyond all, I'm just so grateful to coach such a wonderful group of young people.

The Ndurance Labor Day road 5&10k's saw our leading boys brave their first 10k and lots of our TNHSXC family (moms and dads included) running great races. Nice work Jarrett - rocking 37 flat for 2nd in the 10k and huge kudos to Andrew for his 2nd place in the 5k. Way to represent!

TNHSXC - 8/27/14

Good afternoon TNHSXC family.  Lots to cover - so please read carefully!

UNIFORMS AND SPIRIT WEAR - we are, for the first time, asking that students be responsible for purchasing their own uniforms.  These will belong to the kids, and as long as they have one, they never have to purchase another.  It will also serve as the uniform for Track & Field season.  We have scrambled to outfit our growing teams as too few uniforms get returned.  This way, if they want to compete, they have to buy their kit and keep up with it.  And, they are theirs to keep.  They lose them, they buy another.

Attached is a PDF from The Apparel and Awards Factory.  On it you will find hoodies, 1/4 zips, t-shirts and long sleeve tech T's.  The gear is sweet, reasonably priced and our friends and families look great sporting it. The only thing that the kids have to purchase is the "training tank" and "short".  The total for those two is $23.  I can't imagine another sport where you can be outfitted for $23.   I have sent runners home with these papers beginning last Friday and have only received four back.  They've had the opportunity to try on samples to make sure they fit - if they don't know their size, the samples are in my office.  You can also send your orders straight to Bev at the Apparel and Awards Factory.   Orders must be turned in by Friday.

ST. XAVIER TIGER RUN - Saturday 8/30 @ River Road Country Club (aka Champions Park), Louisville KY.  The St. X meet is a very competitive varsity field and we will only run seven boys and four or five girls.  I'm excited for our growth both in numbers and in competitiveness, but I'm also very realistic and honest with kids about how competitive we are.   There are a number of our runners unavailable due to the holiday weekend, and everyone who is available to run will have a chance to race at the NDurance 5k at NCHS on Monday.  Our roster for Tiger Run is as follows (?'s means I'm not sure of availability)

Jarrett
Tyler
Timmy
Jake
Isaac
Justin
Brandon

Sadie
Allison
Sierra
Samantha
Nada
Edena?
Hope?

Boys race at 9:30 and girls at 10:15.  We will caravan from TNHS at 7:30.

NDurance 5k/10k - 9/1/14 - This is a great road race that is open to the public and I encourage every single TNHS runner to participate.  I will be running the 10k along with the boys that are racing at Tiger Run.  Girls have the option of the 5k or the 10k.  It's a lot of fun, it costs $20 the day of the race ($15 pre-registered) and the form is pasted below.  I still hold NCHS XC very near and dear to my heart and we need to show up in force to support them.  We also need to show up in force to hammer them at their own race!

Here's to a fantastic (and sweaty) Labor Day weekend.

Matt

8-18 Update

Thursday, July 17, 2014

TNHS Speed Week 2014

Each day we will meet at 6 p.m. and will be finished by 9 p.m.

Locations and activities will vary so please follow the schedule closely -

Monday, July 21 - TNHS - fartlek and "Ultimate Frisbee"
Tuesday, July 22 - Dean Watts - intervals and "Craters and Volcanoes"
Wednesday, July 23 - Bernheim (Garden Pavillion, first right) - trail run and "Garbage Ball"
Thursday, July 24 - TNHS - Collegiate Coach, Kevin Alessandro speaking, 2 mile time trial, "Shark and Octopus Tag" and "Smuggler"
Friday, July 25 - Hoyes's house (1056 Lutheran Church) - hike, Slip 'n Slide and cookout
Saturday, July 26 - Louisville Bats baseball game

We will also have a couple of guest speakers but will keep it short.  What I've learned about camps is that I want them training, kids want to play games and don't like to listen to the speakers regardless how valuable their message might be.  So the week will be all about fun.

For Friday's cookout, please bring a side and your own drinks (please don't bring anything with peanuts or any kind of tree nut).  And, families are welcome to stick around.  We'll take a short hike on the ridge and mostly just enjoy not running.

Saturday's Bats game is free.  I have a great friend (the head groundsman and running buddy, Tom) who has gotten us 30 tickets.  Last year we had a blast.  We will need a couple of our seniors and parents to drive.  We will need to know numbers of those attending and driving, so please get back to me with that info.

Thanks, and I hope to see ALL of the XC family next week.

Matt

ENTHUSIASM

The first "E" in our LEADER Values exemplified here (they get better, or just more loopy as they go).  And, I thought I was the only person on the planet that got excited about watching the 2-mile run -
